President Irfaan Ali & Tony Blair inaugurate the Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre

On 30th August 2023, President Irfaan Ali and Tony Blair joined Co-founders David Lammy and Nicola Green at the University of Guyana to celebrate the inauguration of Sophia Point.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin led President Ali and Mr Blair in a conversation on Guyana and the environment. Both emphasised the fundamental importance of conserving and learning about the Guyanese rainforest for limiting global heating. They also discussed Guyana’s role at the upcoming COP28, climate finance and the need for sound governance as Guyana becomes a major oil-producing nation.

We understand the significance of the forest for biodiversity studies and for the advancement of modern medicine, research and development, and importantly, we know for a fact the value of the forests… not down, but the value of the forests standing.
— President Irfaan Ali
